Thermocapillary Flow Near a Cold Wall

چکیده
The thermocapillary feedback mechanism important at the edge of weld pools and other materials processes is examined through a model problem A pool of liquid with a at horizontal free surface is bounded on one side by a vertical solid wall which is maintained at a cold temperature to unit depth and at a warmer temperature below far away the uid is at the warmer temperature Surface tension is a decreasing function of temperature so that the surface thermal gradient drives ow toward the corner When convection is vigorous the ow compresses the thermal gradient which is driving the ow this positive feedback results in small local length scales and high velocities near the corner This problem is examined through a detailed scaling analysis and through numerical simulation for a range of parameters The results show that for vigorous convection the ow in the cold corner is locally determined Typeset using REVTEX

Numerical Study of turbulent free convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties in the presence of magnetic field
In this research, turbulent MHD convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties is investigated numerically. The finite volume method is applied to model the fluid flow and natural convection heat transfer in a square cavity. The fluid flow and heat transfer were simulated and compared for two cases constant and variable properties. It is observed that for the case variable pro...
متن کاملAn Innovation in Film Cooling of the Gas Turbine Blades Applying an Upstream Jet
A new design concept is introduced to control the near-wall integration between the hot-gas boundary layer and the cooling jets in order to enhance the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of the gas turbine blades. In this new approach, another film cooling port, having a very low blowing ratio, which prevents formation of the counter-rotating vortex pare, is applied just upstream of the main ...
متن کاملEffects of curvature on hydrothermal waves instability of radial thermocapillary flows Effets de courbure sur l’instabilité en ondes hydrothermales d’un écoulement thermocapillaire radial
The stability of a thermocapillary flow in an extended cylindrical geometry is analyzed. This flow occurs in a thin liquid layer with a disk shape when a radial temperature gradient is applied along the horizontal free surface. Besides the aspect ratio, a second parameter related to the local curvature is introduced to describe completely the geometrical effects. We recover classical hydrotherm...
متن کاملA boundary-layer model of thermocapillary flow in a cold corner
This work develops a boundary-layer model for the thermocapillary feedback mechanism that can occur at the edge of weld pools and other materials processes, in the limit where convection dominates the heat transport but the Prandtl number is small. Previously, Canright @Phys. Fluids 6, 1415 ~1994!# showed that in this regime the dynamics of this ‘‘cold corner’’ region is locally determined thro...
متن کاملParasitic Effect of Tube Wall Longitudinal Heat Conduction on Cryogenic Gas Temperature
Longitudinal heat conduction is an important parameter in the cryogenic field, especially in cryogenic heat exchangers. In the present work, the parasitic effect of tube wall longitudinal heat conduction on temperature measurement has been studied in cryogenic laminar hydrogen flow. The effects of various parameters such as wall cold end temperature, wall thermal conductivity, gas volumetric fl...
